Health and Fitness- Places to Discover This Month

UC Botanical Garden

Berkeley boasts two world-class botanic gardens. The University of California Botanical Garden is set in Strawberry Canyon, overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Its 34 acres contain plants from around the world arranged by region and include a Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden and Rainforest House. Famous for its large number of rare and endangered species, it’s a delightful setting for a stroll.

One of Berkeley’s many parks, the Berkeley Municipal Rose Garden is considered by many to be the finest rose garden in Northern California. This beautiful setting is graced with 3,000 rose bushes (representing some 250 varieties). The view is worth the outing!

We asked our Berkeley Hills Realty team members to share their best ideas:

Linda Van Couvering: Check out Athletic Playground in Emeryville.  It’s a local treasure and people come from all over to take classes there.  The work out classes are fun and inventive, taught by a great group of instructors.  They are always changing, but my favorites are Monkey Conditioning and Parkour.  It started on a playground, when two trainers met who both had the idea that working out should be like child’s play – fun and natural movement.  They both took their clients to the playground to move again like children do, and that is how Athletic Playground was born, and especially the class Monkey Conditioning.

Rosie Papazian- Check out Ride Oakland – I’ve been doing indoor cycling with them 3-4 times a week for the last 9 months or so and they are awesome! Woman-owned, conveniently located and killer workouts!

Nancy Mueller- A favorite hike or bike ride is the Bay Trail from the bottom of University out to point Richmond and out as far as you want to go.  It’s flat and easy and just gorgeous! Also the trail to the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island is a lot of fun and note that the trail is only open on the weekends right now. You can park at IKEA and access the trail from there if you don’t want to ride to it.

Meoy Gee-  We have both ‘surf and turf’ to walk off our indulgences, or simply to walk & enjoy our beautiful surrounding environs & views… practically ‘in our own backyards’.  We love the Berkeley Marina walk (1.0 mile? to complete the circle).

Tom Knight- Over the past few years one of our favorites is the Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline Park, just one of the myriad jewels of the East Bay Regional Park system, all of which are listed with info and maps at www.ebparks.org. Lesser known, but also wonderful, are hiking trails on the private lands of EBMUD, accessible with paid permit. We recently did a hike around part of the Briones Reservoir and hardly encountered another person in four miles, and it was a Saturday at that!

Gloria Polanski– Walking at Inspiration Point is always, well, inspirational. The Big Springs Trail in Tilden Park is a good workout.

Alexandra Crisafulli- I’m struggling to get back to my Jane Fonda Workouts, both Beginners and Advanced. I can’t even do the Advanced now since I petered out a couple of months ago.  It really hits all the muscle groups, both for strength and for agility.  The stretches are amazing. I made a copy for you and I’m glad to make a couple more.  The great thing about them is that you don’t have to get all gussied up and go to a studio.  You can do it right in front of your tv in the living room or wherever.

From running or strolling around Lake Merritt or kayaking in the Oakland estuary, check out this blog for more fun ideas to get out and enjoy the great outdoors and some indoor fun and read this post for the best running trails in the East Bay.
